2016 Notice of Road Closures

 

Once again the Brampton Board of Trade Santa Claus Parade will be coming your way on Saturday, November 19, at 5:00 pm. Your co-operation in the past has assisted us in presenting Canada’s Best Community Parade as voted on by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. With an average crowd along the parade route exceeding 125,000 and a television audience of over 250,000 the parade has become the Region of Peel’s largest single day event.

 

We are again asking for your co-operation with the 2016 Santa Claus Parade. In order to facilitate the assembly of the parade some road closures/restrictions will be in effect.  The following are the road restrictions, which will be in effect on Saturday, November 19, 2016.

 

Ken Whillans Drive

Ken Whillans Drive will be closed from Church Street to Mara Crescent’s north entrance, from 10:30 am until approximately 7:00 pm. Only Parade traffic will be allowed in this area and there will be no access for local residential traffic to either Sproule Drive or to the south entrance of Mara Crescent from Ken Whillans Drive.   THERE WILL BE NO STREET PARKING ON KEN WHILLANS FROM 10:30 A.M. UNTIL THE END OF THE PARADE.

 

Greenway Retirement Community

There will be normal access to all buildings via the Sproule Drive alternate entrance from 10:30 am until the roads close at 3:30 pm. Access to surrounding roads should be reopened within 45 minutes of the end of the Parade.  PLEASE READ PARKING NOTE AT END.

 

Sproule Drive

Access to Sproule Drive will be restricted to local residential traffic and parade traffic only from 12:30 pm. There will be NO through traffic to Ken Whillans Drive from 10:30 am until the road reopens at approximately 7:00 pm. Main Street will be closed at 3:30 pm and, as a result, ALL traffic in and out of Sproule Drive from either end will be blocked with the exception of emergency vehicles. Be aware that if you have to leave the area (and we will miss your presence at the parade), you must do so BEFORE 3:30 pm. Conversely, if you are having people over to help you celebrate with us (the more the merrier) their vehicle must arrive on the street NO LATER THAN 3:30 pm. Access to Main Street (northbound) should be reopened within 45 minutes of the end of the parade leaving the Sproule/Main area.  PLEASE READ PARKING NOTE AT END.

 


Mara Crescent/Raine Court

Access to Mara Crescent (and Raine Court) will be allowed from Vodden Avenue to the north entrance of Mara Crescent throughout the day. Mara Crescent street parking will be restricted from 10 a.m. until the end of the Parade approximately 7:00 p.m.  Please refer to attached City of Brampton map.  Restrictions for the south entrance of Mara Crescent are outlined in the segment for “Ken Whillans Drive”.  PLEASE READ PARKING NOTE AT END.

 

Church Street

Access to Church Street between Scott Street and Union Street will be restricted to local residential traffic and parade traffic only from 10:30 am. There will be NO through traffic on Church Street.  Access to addresses 48, 53, 58 & 59 Church Street will be from the west side (Union Street) entrance only. Main Street will be closed at 3:30 pm and as a result, ALL traffic from Church Street will be routed to Union Street southbound leading to Market Square Blvd. and then to Queen Street East (eastbound traffic only).  PLEASE READ PARKING NOTE AT END.

 

Main Street

Main Street, from Queen Street to Theatre Lane will be closed from 2:00 p.m. until approximately 7:30 p.m.  The remainder of Main Street, from Sproule Drive to Charolais Boulevard, will be closed from 3:30 pm to approximately 7:30 pm. Only Parade traffic will be allowed in this area with no access for local traffic during this period.  PLEASE READ PARKING NOTE AT END.

William Street / Bird Avenue / Ellen Street / Glen Eagle Crescent /

 Woodbrook Drive / Etobicoke Drive / Pine Ridge Lane

Access to these streets will be closed from 3:30 pm to approximately 7:30 pm.  Street Parking will be allowed as per the normal conditions.

 

Brampton Transit/Go Transit

Due to road closures on Main Street bus access for the Nelson Street West Terminal for both Brampton Transit and Go Transit will be via Market Square Boulevard only. The intersection of Market Square Boulevard and Main Street will be barricaded to accommodate Bus traffic and there will be Police Officers on point duty to control the flow of the spectators and direct buses through the intersection as parade gaps allow.  Queen St. will be closed to through traffic at Main St.

 

EMERGENCY SERVICES

 Emergency Vehicles have full access to all areas of the Parade route during the times indicated.

 IN THESE DESIGNATED AREAS THERE WILL BE NO STREET PARKING ALLOWED FROM 3:30 PM UNTIL THE END OF THE CLEANUP AFTER THE PARADE IN ORDER TO FACILITATE THE FLOW OF THE PARADE – THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

Brampton ready to meet demands of university proposal

BRAMPTON, ON: Today in an announcement at Brampton City Hall, the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development identified Brampton as a target location for building a new post-secondary facility.

Mayor Jeffrey and Councillors, along with members of the City’s Blue Ribbon Exploratory Panel for establishing a University, were present at the announcement made by Minister of Finance Charles Sousa. All welcomed the news and the opportunity to solidify Brampton’s position as a growing and well connected city, and to help deliver more post-secondary education capacity to an underserved, young and diverse population.

“Successful cities combine capital, knowledge, corporate commitments and innovation to spark their next chapter of growth and development,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “Today’s announcement by the Province means that Brampton will be home to a university campus that will foster innovation and deliver the skills needed to be successful today and in the future.”

Bill Davis, former Ontario Premier, was named Chair of the City’s Blue Ribbon Exploratory Panel in 2015. The Panel has been working since then, laying the groundwork to enhance Brampton’s position as the right choice for a new post-secondary facility. Mr. Davis was at City Hall for the announcement today.

“We’re very pleased with the Province’s recognition of the strong case Brampton has made for establishing a new university here,” said Mr. Davis. “We’re excited to present our plans and options as this project moves forward and we’re confident Brampton will soon be home to innovative post-secondary programs to help Brampton students develop skills critical for the future of the City, the Province and Canada.”

The government will launch a call for proposals in January 2017. Ontario universities will be encouraged to work in partnership with local communities, businesses, and other institutions to develop proposals for the new facilities.

The province’s plan is to create new postsecondary facilities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – skills important to current and future employers, and often grouped together under the acronym STEAM.

Quick facts:

  • Brampton is the 9th largest municipality in Canada and the only city among the Top 10 that does not have a major university campus
  • An economic impact study of a new post-secondary facility in Brampton estimated construction would add more than 1800 jobs, and ongoing operations would add more than 1500 jobs
  • The projected increase in population age 18-24 in Brampton between 2011 and 2021 is 35,400
  • The federal government’s target for increasing the numbers of international students in Canadian universities is an excellent match with Brampton’s demographics, featuring an immigrant population of 51 per cent, with strong ties to countries in South and East Asia, the source of about 61 per cent of Canada’s international students currently

Taste of Downtown Brampton

Enjoy a Taste of Downtown Brampton from October 13 – November 10

Brampton, Oct. 12, 2016 – The Downtown Brampton BIA in partnership with The Brampton Guardian has teamed up to launch a Taste of Downtown Brampton, for the second time after a highly successful first event. Working closely with local restaurant businesses, Taste of Downtown Brampton has an added twist this year with special set prix-fixe menus (appetizer, entrée, dessert) created by each participating local restaurant. This four week long culinary program provides Brampton and visiting residents the opportunity to try the various delicious foods at great prices.

From healthy alternatives, to pastas, tacos, frozen yogurt and burgers; Taste of Downtown Brampton has something for everyone to enjoy. This year, the culinary program presents fourteen business participants including:
