What If: Better Mental Health through Scent

From 11am until 12:15pm

The third Monday of the month has been named “Blue Monday” and is said to be the most depressing day of the year. Although not based on any statistical facts, it has been concluded that following a mix of bad weather, longer winter nights and the aftermath of the festive period, people experience more sadness. Combine this with the current economic situation and the aftermath of COVID and it is time to put mental health forward!

Blue Monday falls on January 16, 2023, and we are offering solutions to help you through the most depressing day of the year. PAMA (Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives) and Author Tracy Pepe are pleased to provide you with an interactive scent learning class – WHAT IF?

Using scent derived from natural plant essential oils, Tracy Pepe will walk you through an innovative and engaging opportunity to feel and smell happy. This unique opportunity will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams. All registrants will receive a scent kit delivered to their home or office before the class.

The class will focus on the connection between brain activity and scent, highlighting the research on smell loss (anosmia). Using scent to recall memory is the basis of this lively workshop - "What if?".

We will discuss and share:

  • Mental health and the connection to different essential oils
  • The Scented Space – understanding how scent impacts how we feel
  • How to use scent to address symptoms of ADD, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, and Sleep Issues
  • Images from the PAMA Art Collection and the relationship with smell
  • Discussion on Tracy's recently published book "Why the NOSE?"

Who is this class for?

  • Anyone looking for an opportunity to connect, learn about scent and talk about mental health

Free, pre-registration required. Please register by January 10 to receive your kit on time (1 kit/registration). Kit delivery is free within Brampton, for those outside of Brampton but in the GTA, you can pick-up your kit at PAMA or pay a delivery fee of $16.
