Downtown Brampton BIA Launches “Clean Crew” Pilot Program: Empowering Neurodivergent Workers and Beautifying Downtown
In an inspiring move toward inclusivity and community enhancement, the Downtown Brampton Business Improvement Area (BIA) has launched the “Clean Crew”, a 12-week pilot cleaning program created in collaboration with The Chance Centre.
This initiative provides meaningful employment opportunities for neurodivergent individuals, many of whom are experiencing paid employment for the first time, while simultaneously working to beautify the vibrant Downtown Brampton.
“We’re incredibly proud to launch this pilot program,” said Louroz Mercader, Executive Director of Downtown Brampton BIA. “It’s heartwarming to see how meaningful employment can transform lives, empowering individuals while creating a brighter and more welcoming downtown.”
“This opportunity is more than just employment; it represents hope, dignity, and a new level of independence for adults who are so often underestimated because of their disabilities,” stated Marlene Spence, Executive at The Chance Centre.
“The pride in being able to say, ‘I’m going to work today,’ is truly life-changing, especially for those who are so often left at home, dependent on others, and losing their sense of self-worth. This opportunity reignites the light of hope not just for families, but for the individuals themselves as they discover their strengths and feel a true sense of belonging.”
Beyond its social impact, the Clean Crew directly supports the BIA’s broader efforts to enhance the look and feel of Downtown Brampton, ensuring that public spaces remain clean, safe, and inviting year-round.
“I believe that providing the opportunity for individuals of all abilities to contribute and be a part of a community gives people a sense of purpose and pride in themselves” said Carrie Leigh Percival, Chair of the Downtown Brampton BIA.
The Clean Crew has hit the streets this summer, with support from local businesses and residents, who appreciate its positive impact on both the community and the downtown environment.
